Allen is the only candidate in the field with experience in elected office, having served on the Chapel Hill Town Council until December 2021. He has experience creating consensus, meeting with stakeholders, and acheiving progressive victories. With this experience, he is ready to hit the ground running in Raleigh and build on his innovative and successful policy wins, including:

  • Created the first-ever Town Criminal Justice Debt Fund in North Carolina to assist people who are working to get their lives back on track but who are burdened with excessive court costs and fees.

  • Passed a nondiscrimination ordinance which extended civil rights protections to more people and added sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes. 

  • Passed the Town of Chapel Hill’s first Climate Action and Response Plan.

  • Passed a $10 million affordable housing bond.

  • Created the Training for Action and Progress (TAP) program, which recruits and trains young people and people of color for public service.

  • Approved incentives to bring at least 400 new jobs to downtown Chapel Hill on West Franklin Street.

  • Increased Emergency Housing Assistance by voting to allocate more than $135,000 to assist residents struggling with unpaid rent, during the pandemic.

  • Facilitated outdoor seating on downtown Franklin Street to support small businesses during the pandemic.
